Online Training and Exam Information
All Notary Publics in the State of Nevada are required to complete training through the approved online courses pursuant to NRS 240.018 and NRS 240.1943.
Training is required:
- When applying to become a notary public and/or an electronic notary public for the first time
- When applying to renew a notary commission appointment for both a traditional notary public and an electronic notary public
- When mandated to do so due to compliance violations or fines for failing to follow State of Nevada regulations
Training can also be completed by a Notary Public at their own discretion at any time during their appointed commission as a notary.
Available Online Classes
Traditional notary training is required for in person, standard notarizations. The traditional notary training class is designed to provide a detailed explanation of the roles and responsibilities of a notary. The class will cover important topics such as:
- sufficiently identifying document signers
- what a notary certificate is and how to use it earnestly
- determining if a form of identification is valid or not
- the information required to be recorded in your notary journal
- providing information about how to avoid fines and penalties
- approved notary fees and how to calculate these fees
- who is legally responsible for the notary stamp and journal; the notary public or their employer
- what to do if your notary stamp is lost or stolen
- how to avoid common mistakes
The electronic notary training class is designed to provide a detailed explanation of the roles and responsibilities of an electronic notary whether the notarial acts are performed in-person or by means of audio-video communication. The class will cover important topics such as:
- identifying document signers through an electronic notary solution platform
- the requirements of the electronic seal and signature
- electronic notarial fees
- what a digital certificate is and why it is required to perform an electronic notarial act
- the information required to be recorded in your electronic notary journal
- the requirements to perform an electronic notarial act for a document signer outside the United States by means of audio-visual communication
- what to do in the event that the electronic technology used to perform electronic notarial acts is compromised or rendered ineffective.
If you are a new or renewing traditional notary and would like to also register as an electronic notary, both classes are required. And you will need to complete an exam for each training course.
Guidelines for streamlining and optimizing your training experience:
- Complete training through a desktop PC is recommended. Tablets and phones frequently have breaks in connection that prevent training from being completed fully.
- The training program works best using Google Chrome or Firefox. Internet Explorer is not recommended.
- Complete your training and exam before submitting your application
- It is highly encouraged to only begin eNotary training after y0u have received your traditional notary commission certificate. Beginning your eNotary application before you are an active notary will frequently result in a rejected application.
- If you do not receive confirmation of your training exam certificate in the training site portal, you can submit proof of completion by providing a screenshot or PDF copy of the completion screen to nvnotary@sos.nv.gov
