Step-by-Step Guide to a Notary Public Commission
Before you begin the process to become a Notary Public, please take time to review the requirements of the position and information linked here. Committing to serve as a Notary Public means that you understand that this responsibility requires unwavering attention to detail, ethical conduct, and a commitment to safeguarding the public's trust.

Notary Public commission requirements
Before submitting an application to become a Notary Public using the SilverFlume site you must:
- Complete the approved Notary Public Training Course and Exam training through the Secretary of State approved website (link below with Step 1 instructions). Any additional training completed through other providers is not sufficient to meet our State training requirements.
- Purchase a Bond through a surety bonding company that is authorized to perform services in Nevada.
- Take a notarial oath as mandated by NRS 240.030. The notarial oath can be taken at the same time you file your Bond with the County Clerk’s office (following step).
- File your Bond with the appropriate County Clerk’s Office. The County Clerk's Office will provide you with a Filing Notice.

Step 1:Complete required Notary Public Training
Training can be completed before, during, or after Steps 2-4. However, it must be completed within 90 days of submitting your application.
The required training consists of two parts, the Notary Public Course and the Notary Public Commission Exam. The approved training can be found at: https://training.nvsos-training.com/
Tips to remember:
- You DO NOT submit payment when completing your training or exam, payment will be submitted when you file your application.
- You will need to enroll in each portion separately.
- For the Notary Public Course: Select the Course Catalog please, enroll in: (Commission Course) State of Nevada - Notary Public Course [reference picture below]
- The last screen of the Course will tell you that you need to complete the Exam. The Exam does not begin automatically and there is no button to continue to the Exam.
- When you are ready to take the Exam, enroll in: (Commission Course) State of Nevada - Notary Public Exam [reference picture below]
- You will need to record a passing score of at least 80% on the Notary Public Exam to be appointed as a Notary Public
- If you fail the Exam, you will need to wait 24 hours to record another score
- All Notary Publics will need to retake the Course and Exam at each renewal
- If you do not receive confirmation of your training exam certificate in the training site portal, you can submit proof of completion by providing a screenshot or PDF copy of the completion screen to nvnotary@sos.nv.gov

Step 2: Purchase a Bond
Contact the surety bonding companies that you are interested in to obtain details regarding their costs and their process. The Secretary of State's Office cannot recommend any one business over another. If you are becoming a notary as a requirement of your employment, your employer may have a vendor they use for bonding.

Step 3: Take the notarial oath
Take and subscribe to the oath set forth in Section 2 of Article 15 of the Constitution of the State of Nevada as if the applicant were a public officer. The notarial oath can be taken with a qualified individual at the County Clerk's Office or with another State of Nevada Notary. Steps 2 and 3 can be completed at the same time if you choose to take your notarial oath at the County Clerk's Office.

Step 4:Obtain a Filing Notice

Contact your local County Clerk to determine their appointment or fee requirements. A list of County Clerk information is available here: https://www.nvsos.gov/sos/businesses/apostille/nevada-clerks-recorders.
- If you are a Resident of Nevada, please file and record the bond in the office of the county clerk of the county in which you reside.
- If you are a Resident of an Adjoining State, please file with the clerk of the county in this State in which you maintain a place of business or are employed.

Notary Public Application
Steps to complete your application for appointment as a Notary Public (pictures below instructions for reference):
- Create and/or Login to your SilverFlume account portal: https://www.nvsilverflume.gov/home
- Locate the "OTHER BUSINESS SERVICES" column
- Select "NOTARY"
- From your dashboard, expand the Notary Menu (on the left hand side)
- Select the appropriate option: "RENEWAL APPOINTMENT & TRAINING FEE" or "APPLICATION FOR APPOINTMENT & TRAINING FEE”

7. Complete Notary Commission application
- Please note: Confidential Address Program is a State program that helps victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking and/or stalking from being located by the perpetrator through public records. The program provides a fictitious address and confidential mail forwarding services to individuals and families across Nevada.
- You must be registered with to include the information in your Notary Public profile. Do not select this if you are not currently a participant in the Program.
- If you are a participant, upload the documents with your application
8. Upload supporting documentation (signed application, filing notice, training certificate).
- Your notary application should be printed so you can apply a wet signature to the document. The use of a digital or drawn signature will cause your application the be rejected.
- Submitting your bond without a filing notice will cause you application to be rejected; providing a copy of a bond and submitting a filing notice are not interchangeable.
- If you are a resident of an adjoining state, you will also need to upload the additional required affidavits and/or licenses available here: https://www.nvsos.gov/sos/licensing/notary/forms-fees
- Uploaded Documents need to be uploaded as a PDF file type. All other Document types will need to be converted.
9. Review submission and Add to Shopping Cart
- Once you submit your application through SilverFlume, you are not required to submit a hard copy or email copy to our office. A paper application is only needed if you are resubmitting information because your application had previously been rejected.

Please note that the steps and information provided above apply to your traditional notary renewal. Processing time is considered the time from when documents are received in our office until they are completed and submitted to be returned by mail. All documents are processed in the order in which they are received; regardless of submission type, amendment, or resubmission.
