(Carson City, NV; February 23, 2016) – Candidate filing for non-judicial offices on the 2016 ballot begins at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, March 7, 2016 and runs through 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 18, 2016.  Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske encourages candidates who will be filing at the Secretary of State’s office to schedule appointments in advance; however an appointment is not required in order to file for office.  Candidate filing will only be available at the Secretary of State’s offices in the State Capitol building in Carson City or the Grant Sawyer Building in Las Vegas during regular business hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. PST between March 7 and March 18.

Candidates should call (775-684-5705) or e-mail (nvelect@sos.nv.gov) the Secretary of State’s Elections Division to schedule their appointments.  Appointments will be scheduled on a first-come first-served basis, and every effort will be made to accommodate each candidate’s schedule.  Candidates who drop in to file without an appointment may have to wait until a filing officer is available.

Candidates for United States Senator must file with the Secretary of State’s office, along with candidates for Representative in Congress, State Senator, and State Assemblyperson, University Board of Regents, and State Board of Education from districts that are multi-jurisdictional (i.e., encompass more than one county in whole or in part).  Candidates filing for Representative in Congress, State Senator, State Assemblyperson, University Board of Regents, and State Board of Education from districts located wholly within a single county, as well as all county offices, must file with the County Clerk/Registrar of Voters in that county. Candidates for municipal offices must file with the City Clerk.

When filing for office, candidates will need to provide proof of residence and pay the statutory filing fee.  Acceptable proof of residence includes a valid Nevada driver’s license or identification card, current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, or document issued by a governmental entity, including a check, which indicates the candidate’s name and residential address in Nevada.  A candidate’s voter registration card is not acceptable proof of residence.  Proof of residence that lists a post office box is not acceptable unless a street address has not been assigned for the candidate’s residence.

Candidate filing fees must be paid by cash, certified check, or cashier’s check.  Under state law, personal checks and credit cards cannot be accepted. Below is the list of statutory filing fees for the non-judicial offices on the 2016 ballot: 

        United States Senator - $500 
        Representative in Congress - $300 
        State Board of Education - $200 
        Any county office - $100 
        State Senator or Assemblyperson - $100 
        Any district office other than District Judge - $30 
        University Board of Regents - $0*

*No filing fee is required from a candidate for an office the holder of which receives no compensation. (NRS 293.193).
